When we last heard from the Canadian collective, they were probably due for a bit of a breather. “Looking at the general state of the world right now, we knew that putting our unified friendship out there was a great protest that we could do,” band ringleader Kevin Drew said in a recent interview, and he’s totally right: Broken Social Scene’s mere existence at this point feels at odds with a world that’s increasingly fractured and disconnected, and because Hug Of Thunder’s ambitions are simple, it means the execution is right on point. They prefer a more hands-off approach to publicizing their music, wagging their finger at society but never getting too involved, preferring to let their art speak for itself. Instead, Hug Of Thunder is just a refreshing and welcome excuse for a bunch of old friends to get the gang together again and create some solid songs that don’t reinvent the wheel but hit often enough to justify these people’s continuous orbit around each other. Contrast the unassuming returns of these early-’00s artists that deliver the goods with some of the louder returns that might not - those of infinite content loops and incessant teasing - and it’s pretty easy to spot the difference.īroken Social Scene have never been a cynical group, especially when it comes to their music, and there’s no performative trolling to be found in its expansive lineup. In the past months, we’ve had stellar comebacks from Feist and Do Make Say Think, and new albums from Emily Haines and Stars are on the horizon. In fact, there’s been a lot of music this year that has served as a reminder of the longevity and potency of the ragtag crew that ushered in the Bush years. After seven years away, Broken Social Scene have returned with Hug Of Thunder, an album that’s a galvanizing reminder of the strength of the Toronto indie-rock scene.

11/24/2023 0 Comments Lyme brain fog treatment burburI am often asked for suggestions on detox methods: which ones are the best, which ones are the most gentle, and which ones are my favorite. Pretty much every Doctor who treats this disease tells their patients, "it will get worse before it gets better," and that can't possible be more true. It's one of the unavoidable parts of Lyme treatment, but in a way it's good because you know that your treatment is working. A herxheimer is normal and par for the course of Lyme Disease treatment, because no matter how careful you are the bacteria inevitably release more toxins than your body can naturally clear. Herxheimers have landed people in the ER, and can get very severe, so detoxing is of the utmost importance. This is called a herxheimer reaction, and it typically feels like an extreme flare up of your symptoms or like you have a really really terrible flu. So what ends up happening is that these toxins build up, stick around in your body, and start to cause some pretty terrible symptoms. Your liver, kidney & lymphatic system work really hard to get these toxins out of your system, but there is often an overload of toxins which can't be cleared fast enough on its own. This bacteria is much the same, but when it dies it releases a cloud of toxins into the blood stream and surrounding tissues. This is a strange analogy, but if you've ever encountered a stink bug you'll know that when you kill them they release an awful odor. When you begin to kill this bacteria with antibiotics of any sort it releases toxins as it dies. Lyme Disease is caused by the Borrelia Burgdorferi bacteria, which is a corkscrew shaped bacteria that has a habit of burrowing its way deep into the tissues of the body. Detoxing while you are treating Lyme Disease is crucial, and it's necessary if you are in any stage of treatment.įor those of you who might be new to Lyme, let me explain a bit more. doi:10.There's one thing that goes hand in hand with Lyme Disease, and that's Detox. None of this is difficult, but there is a bunch to learn. The Calibre manual has a tutorial and lots of examples. For example, "John Smith\s+\d+" would search for a) the author John Smith, then b) any number of spaces, then c) any number of digits. Think of regex as wild cards on steroids.Įven if you have a really simple header, like author and page on odd pages, and title and page on even pages, there will be differences in spacing and so on, so you have to build searches that can handle this. When you do the Calibre setup the first time you start it up, just make sure you select the correct model of Kindle, and Calibre will take care of. Those are controlled by the settings in your Kindle. None of those are related to the file conversion. You do need to learn some regex, no matter what, to do this. Those 3 things (WordWise, page numbering and Fonts) are controlled on the Kindle itself. can turn a simple search into a detective story. Input profile: (I selected 'Kindle' but the default might be fine) 'PDF output'. You are absolutely correct, variables in the text like roman numerals, timestamps, etc. In the Convert Books window, set the following: Output format: PDF (select from the dropdown at top right) 'Look & feel'. The big difference is, you don't really know what to use until after you see what comes out of a conversion, you can just guess. If you use the conversion search and replace, you will be using basically the very same search strings you would use in the editor. Watch the dates, some are too old to be useful. There are a lot of tutorials/demos on YouTube.some are very good, some are just garbage. I've never seen a pdf conversion that couldn't use some editing, no matter how good the text layer is.Ĭalibre itself provides some tutorials and a very extensive manual. Doing this you can also re-connect paragraphs split by the page breaks and so on. You will usually need several different search/replace routines to clean up a given book. Then using search and replace to get rid of it is much, much easier. Open your converted epub in the editor, and you can see exactly what it is and how it's arranged in the html code view. Personally, I have found that trying to take out this extraneous text at conversion is very frustrating. But look at the search and replace page and give it a try. If you have headers that are really all the same and/or perfectly predictable, you can possibly come up with a regular expression that will take them out. Depending on how this text is done in the pdf, you might be able to get rid of it on conversion by using the search and replace features. What you are referring to is likely page headers or footers in the original. If someone saved a pdf from a word processor, there is likely a very accurate text layer, but if it was put in by OCR.who knows? The "text" you see in a pdf viewer is not the text Calibre will use in a conversion. You can choose the Output format from a drop down menu in the top right corner. Keep in mind that a pdf can contain just about anything, either visible or under the covers. If you have had reasonably good luck converting pdfs so far, count yourself lucky. |
